Over the coming weeks we’ll be posting up a series of pertinent articles tackling some of the key issues currently affecting the Third Sector. To view our other articles simply click on whichever one appeals to you from the list on the right.
September 2009
April 2009 saw the launch of the new Modernisation Fund. Charities already involved in, or considering, a merger or alliance, can now apply for interest-free loans of over £30,000. From early June this year, certain charities will be eligible to apply for £1,000 bursaries and grants of up to £10,000. Grants will be aimed at Third Sector organisations with an annual income of between £150,000 and £750,000, favouring those who are providing help to those worst hit by the recession.
There are certainly many plusses to joining forces with another organisation – be it a full merger or a more basic collaboration, hence Government support for the practice. These include a higher profile, lower costs, shared resources, and the opportunity to revitalise public image with a powerful new brand identity. All of which can combine to give greater operational and financial efficiency.
To merge or not to merge ...
However, the process holds many pitfalls. Just as with any new relationship, a high degree of compatibility coupled with shared values and objectives are crucial yet sometimes tricky to achieve. Then comes the paperwork: thorny compliance issues – especially with the Charities Commission, revised staffing, asset disposal – the list can seem endless. This is exactly where Charita can help save the day because our expertise encompasses law, accountancy and marketing, so we can take an unusually rounded and detailed approach.
We’ll help you with the initial feasibility study to assess whether a merger is desirable or even possible. If it’s a green light, we can take on compliance, cumbersome funding applications, cost and business rationalisation programmes, and help you retain and attract support. We’re also confident you’ll find our costs will be largely, if not entirely, offset against the efficiencies we create for you.
